Terrain d'aviation, terrain d'attraction.
The strip never became fully operational ; the entire front had disintegrated, and the location no longer had a tactical value. During the period in which the bulk of the Battalion worked at Lombron, a detachment laid a thousand feet of PSP to improve a former German landing strip, which was used by C - 47 aircraft for the evacuation of wounded.
Le Mans found us sending one truck load of men and one truck full of francs to get a bottle of wine. Two bottles of wine necessitated sending for another load of francs. What a beating ! We were armed to the teeth, but the one-armed bandits beat us every time. A pack of cigarettes got you more than a truckload of francs, but butts were tough to get. Climbing out of our holes, we headed North thru Paris and bivouaced overnight at Le Bourget just outside Paris. That long low whistle emitted each time a petite mademoiselle went by, soon filled the air. The Calvados Palor we had acquired, frightened the frogs. We shook like a Model " T " on the takeoff. Morning found us on our way again. The convoy stretched out for miles, and we slowed down occasionally as a Frenchman ran alongside offering a bottle of wine or Cognac. It would be down right unfriendly, and certainly cause a breach in friendly relations to refuse to take it, and worse not to drink it.
The second week of August was the primary test for the Company reconnaissance party to prove itself. Leaving Balleroy the party reconnoitered possible sites in the forward area of Le Mans. At the end of approximately 5 week the entire batallion assembled at Lombron to pressed with our first taste of a hessian mat field. It was here that the men encountered the full meaning of the word " TAR ", gasoline baths were frequent to keep a man's limbs from attaching themselves to the remeinder of his torso.
